An educational and workshop centre promoting the reduction of textile waste and overproduction
The Municipal Cultural Centre building stands in the centre of town at ul. Szkolna 11. It has over a century of history. It began as a wooden villa near Herman Schütt's former factory. After the Second World War it was partly rebuilt, keeping its original timber structure and a historic stove. Today the building is marked by a stately entrance portal with ornamental metalwork echoing its historic character.
The concept is an educational and workshop centre created by adapting the Municipal Cultural Centre building in Czersk. Its guiding theme is a response to the overproduction and waste of textiles, a problem that hits small towns especially hard, where options to donate, repair or recycle are limited.
The ground floor is representative, public and educational. It holds a textile collection point, the main element and purpose of the whole centre. A café is joined with a meeting room and a small gallery, allowing lectures, exhibitions and cultural events. There is also a point of sale for goods made on site.
The upper floor is given over mainly to workshops and education. It houses, among others, a sewing room, a creative room set up for hand-sewing, darning and embroidery, and a workshop room with classes in painting, cutting and remaking pieces. This functional split creates a logical flow for visitors. The open, representative ground floor supports everyday use of the café and meeting room, integrating the local community. The more specialist upper floor is planned for workshops and creative activity with an educational dimension.
